Eye space

1997 - LA CHAUFFERIE, STRASBOURG Visual installation and sculpture, plaster construction 500x240x210 cm, copper, medium

This piece contains two parallel copper tubes at eye level. Circular wooden plaques, embedded in the plaster, retain the imprint of the spectators' faces and indicate the precise position of two people facing each other. The visual synthesis linked to the conduction of the gaze creates the illusion that the two eyes of one's partner merge to become one. This optical phenomenon allows the left and right images to come together to create the appearance of this completed unity. Based on the model of the brain, which is at once simple, double and crossed, like a chiasm or a chimera, the intention is to capture the meeting point, the intersection where gazes and all the senses intermingle. Contrary to binary modes of thinking, the idea is to consider things from the perspective of confusion, ambiguity and movement.
